w/ Jean-Marie Horvat
Robin Thicke 'Look Easy'
1 h 43 min • 2023
Jean-Marie Horvat’s ability to craft hit songs for some of the world’s most renowned names in music is no secret. It has earned him 5x Grammy nominations, multi-platinum records, and the first call to artists such as Michael Jackson, Teddy Riley, Justin Timberlake, The Weeknd, Ty Dolla $ign, Robin Thicke, and more.
In this Puremix exclusive, Jean-Marie deconstructs his mix of “Look Easy” by Robin Thicke and explains the why behind every plugin choice, eq move, parallel chain, and effect he used to not only make the mix sound good, but feel good.
See how Jean-Marie Horvat:
- Gives the back story of the project and their sonic goals for the record
- Explains how he got the nickname “The Parallel King” and breaks down the parallel chains that impressed Teddy Riley from across the hallway
- Discusses why he starts with the vocals when mixing and the techniques he has used to craft a discography full of hit records
- Breaks down his mix bus processing chain and explains his preference for mid/side compression
- Explains the importance of making the mix serve the song instead of making an “impressive sounding mix”
- Goes through his lead vocal chain plugin by plugin, explaining the choices he made based on the vocal in front of him
- Deconstructs his approach to background vocal
- Explains his approach to a full bottom end
This is your chance to join Jean-Marie Horvat and watch as he deconstructs his mix of "Look Easy" by Robin Thicke.

Puremix is on fire lately. Beatles, Motown, David Bendeth, Michael Brauer (I don't know how you guys did that), and now Jean-Marie Horvat?? If you keep this up I'll be subscribed forever. We're being totally spoiled.

This video is a good example of "compressing with EQs, Equing with compressors" Fab was talking about in another video.
Amazing ! And Jean Marie is a real entertainer !

A great look at putting a pop mix together. He's got a great take on what your perspective should be while mixing. And I loved some of the ideas he presented about mixing "vocals first" and the use of busses to take your mixes to another level.
