Now that Adrian has briefed Fab on the background of the song, the intention, and direction for where he would like to see it head, it's time for Fab to continue unpacking the session to find the exciting moments and bring them to life.
In this episode, watch as Fab continues the mix for "Some Summer Day" by working through the kick bass relationship, applying 2 bus processing, and introducing the vocals to the mix.
See how Fab Dupont:
- Carves out space in the bass guitar to make a hole for the kick drum
- Creates a shared space for the drums with the Universal Audio Ocean Way Reverb plugin
- Tweaks the second bass guitar track to create a stereo effect that wraps around the mix
- Uses the room that he set up on the drums on multiple elements of the mix for a cohesive space
- Uses an amp simulation to add texture to the guitar tones
- Revisits the 2 bus processing chain he set up in episode 1 to find a better fit for the bus compressor
- Creates a submit of the background vocals and process them as a group
- Uses a multi-band compressor to help control unwieldy vocals
- Deals with "Ess-ing" buildups
- Creates a "scene change" in the shout section with he lead vocal

I always enjoy these videos where you interact directly with the clients in person because that is such a huge part of getting recommendations, return clients, being successful, etc. You understand the clients, show humor, humility, and positivity. You're great at showing how to suggest changes to the arrangement in a way that won't offend the client. Not just this video but all of the similar videos. And your tutorials are always entertaining and funny. I just wanted to say everything in one comment haha. Thank you Fab.

Sounds a lot better.
One thing though... I noticed when the guitar solo ended and the main riff came back in there was something a little off. I think the beginning of the guitar riff is cutoff which in return makes it sound a little weird.
Overall though what you did with a song that has a single loop with multiple moving parts is astounding. Kudos bro.

Well after the prior video I thought the mix was impressive, but a bit too slick sounding. I think much of that has improved in this video and it's sounding great. Fun to watch the ideas come to life.

@telepathy it's not "unconsolidate". it's Ungroup a previously grouped clips.
group clips: Command+Alt+G
ungroup clips: Command+Alt+U

Someone asked on the last episode, I'll ask again here - what's the command/shortcut to "unconsolidate" clips that Fab does at 4:07?

Impressive to hear how Fab manages to stay true to the roughmix whilst enhancing the whole thing. I think the song would greatly benefit from a real drummer and a real drum recording in terms of groove and feel (with fills and such, that are missing here). But its interesting to see how it can be made to work with just programmed drums. I get a lot of material with programmed stuff (horns, drums, strings mostly) and it's cool to see what fab does to those sources. I think he could feature the harmony vocals a litte more. On the other hand, making the lead prominent makes a more pop appeal...

Great !
What shortcut is Fab using a 34:50 to "unconsolidated" his clip on the drums samples?

I absolutely LOVE everything Fab does! But I can't help but notice when he creates (and balances) new elements like drum additions or crush tracks, their output assignment is not through the SUM bus initially. The SUM master fader is -6 as he states early in the video. He is a total pro and I'm sure he catches this later in the series! It's something to watch out for when working with summing and print busses. I've gotten through a final print only to discover some element was only going to Output 1-2 and thus didn't even make it into printed mix :(

Amazing solution for that mono loop, really makes it come alive. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
